International Man of Mystery THePETEBOX is an “ageless and nameless, beatboxing, guitar-playing, singing, loop-arranging music maker from Nottingham, UK,” according to the man himself. He’s also an O Music Award nominee for Best Fan Cover.

This beatboxing champion‘s cover of The Pixie’s “Where Is My Mind” blew ours — mind, that is. We recently caught up with Mr PETEBOX himself to find out more about how he honed those mad skills.

How long have you been beatboxing? How did you get into it?
I heard Rahzel on a CD a few years ago and was amazed at what humans are able to do to make music without any instruments. From that moment on I studied beatboxing, learned it, practiced it, developed my style and started making music with it. I then started playing around with a loop pedal and found that to be the area I was most creative in — looping and layering my vocals to create songs.
Are you a fan of The Pixies? Why did you choose that song?
The Pixies, along with Nirvana, are the reason I started wanting to create music. I listened to loads of bands before, but it was them that resonated with me on that deeper level. I remember hearing that song for the first time and it sending me [into] shivers. Seriously. But my choice to interpret it in the way I did was more of a stumbled-upon thing after messing about plugging my guitar into my loop pedal as well as a microphone. I thought it sounded cool so recorded it.

How did you feel when the video got so popular?
The great thing about it is that it’s the first time I’ve reconciled where I came from with my music making and where I’ve got to. I started out playing and writing grunge songs on my guitar, then I got into electronic dance music at the same time I started beatboxing and mainly beatboxed drum ‘n’ bass, techno etc. This video is a coming together of those different worlds for me, a reconciliation of the start and current points of my musical journey. For those reasons it’s made the fact that it was that video that got so popular a lot more meaningful to me and I’ve found a new direction with what I’m doing. It’s great.

How long did it take to make that video?
I worked with a guy called Simon Ellis who filmed it in his kitchen. He was borrowing a new, never-before-used camera, and I was nervous as I thought it was too early to be singing and my voice wasn’t working right. It took four attempts. So yeah, about an hour to nail on the live shoot and a few goes through the day before to get the arrangement right and levels of everything right.

When did you join YouTube?
I joined YouTube around five years ago when I first started doing shows and have mainly been posting videos of live stuff. I started taking the approach of making studio recorded videos at the start of this year and the “Where Is My Mind” one was the first.

Why do you think you should win the O Music Award?
I can’t imagine words having too much say in the matter here. Watch the video and at the very least gain some enjoyment from it. With things like this, standards don’t really play too much a part as everything is so high in quality, so I guess if it appeals to your taste more than others, give it a vote!

Here's the equipment i'm gonna be using at the forthcoming festivals i'm playing and in my shows from now on. There's a few goodies in there n i feel i've arrived at a level of technology i'm happy and inspired by.
The thing i'm actually most excited about though is the case to carry it all! It's a completely custom job, made by the hugely skilled and forward thinking chaps at FLIGHTCASE UK.
I sent them pics of my stuff, took it in... and we came up with this. And yes, the pedalboard fits in on top of the other stuff before the lid goes on! Amaaazing! Obviously i doubt many of you would understand my joy at this but it has literally amazed me what they've managed to do, well chuffed.

S2AS summer party show

Had an amazing night on wednesday playing the S2AS + Poole Kiteclub summer party to raise funds for the Macmillan Charity.
The night was amazing, the people were amazing and the show was amazing, many thanks to all who came and for inviting me along. There's some pics here
I'm also very amazingly pleased to be a new member of the S2AS family - they have sorted me out with a full snowboard setup so i'm ready for the slopes! Amazing!

New Video! 2 x Kaoss Pad Beatbox - One Lemmings

Hello all!

I've just uploaded a new video onto the tube. It's been a while since my last one, my retake on Pixies track Where Is My Mind, went nutsness on the net (it's now amassed over a million views, amazing) and i've been hard at work on a new project surrounding the idea and presentation of that video. It's taking a while, longer than i'd hoped but I want to get it right and shall be releasing more details very soon...

Until then i'm going to be pursuing another series of videos - my 'Home Filmed' series where i'm just filming and recording bits and bobs i'm doing at home on my little camera. I make so many different types of music that usually gets set aside for other stuff so I thought why not get down everything I do and put it up for you all to see.

Here's the second one in the Home Filmed series. It's made using two Korg Kaoss Pads linked together which are effects processors/loopers/samplers all built into one. It's a lot of fun and a good way for you guys to see exactly how they work as i'm going to be using them quite a bit from now on. It's all vocal, sometimes using my sounds to manipulate the effects in the Kaoss Pads to create a certain sound.
Remember it's all made in one take, everything performed and recorded live n all made with one microphone and my mouth!

After an ace couple of shows for this years Dot to Dot with my band, we were excited to be headed to Manchester to finish the trio... until this happened!

We didn't make it for the show but had a nice walk in the moors n a cuppa in a cosy pub in the middle of nowhere...

Still, dot to dot this year was amazing, especially the Nottingham show, best with my band yet I think.

I'm headed off to play my first UK festival of the year - Bearded Theory in Derbyshire.
It's a day off from my bands tour and i'm missioning it up from Brighton, back down there tomorrow to play at the Hope, last show of the tour with my band!

Binaural shoot with SWIMMInG in Bamburgh

I spent the bank holiday weekend up in Bamburgh, near Scotland, setting up 2 mixers, 8 speakers, 2 guitars, bass, my beatbox sampler, a little casio keyboard and some mics on the beach and in the dunes in the shade of Bamburgh castle, while sonic artist Dallas Simpson walked around us with microphones in his ears, director Simon Ellis filmed us, dogs barked, microlights buzzed past us and a beach full of holiday makers wondered what on earth we were up to.
What we were up to was doing our second binaural recording of one of our songs. The idea is this: We setup our equipment in a space, this time on the beach. We sit around 2/3 meters away from each other and channel our sounds through speakers set at different places around us. Dallas moves amongst us, passing each of us as we play and each of the speakers. He has tiny microphones in his ears which he uses to record the sound. The effect of this is that when the listener hears the recording back, they are in effect listening through his ears, hearing each soundsource becoming louder as he gets closer and experiencing the full 360degrees environment around Dallas' head. It is an amazing experience to hear sound this way.

Tonight i'm in Prague to play at the Young Prague 2011 Choir Festival. Choirs from around the world come and perform here over the week... and tonight's the party!

I haven't slept, missed checkin for my first flight by THREE minutes and they wouldn't let me on... had to buy new one... ouch... it's been a mission but the place is rather splendid and the party's gonna be ace so it is all worth it.

Last night Royal Festival Hall in London, tonight this place - i'm feeling rather classy right now, better enjoy it while it lasts!

NEW VIDEO - My version of Pixies - Where Is My Mind

This is crazy. I posted this video on youtube two days ago. It has now reach 140,000 views. I'm amazed and humbled that that many people have watched and hopefully enjoyed me performing. The fact that the internet, especially in terms of these 'organically grown' virals, relies on people being inspired to share media with their friends etc has made this event real special. Ace.

Here it is, I hope you like it to:

The track is made live using a guitar, beatbox, voice and an RC-50 loop station.
The reverb on the vocals at the end is off a Kaoss Pad which only features at the end for the reverb effect (u can see 2 but that's to do a different track we filmed after!)
There's nothing prerecorded or added post recording, it's all live!

New Video! Pete and the Boxes

So here's the new video i've just posted. It's the first of many i'll be releasing over the coming months and I thought i'd make it a bit of an experiement to see what I was capable of on the video side of things. Against all odds it actually turned out ok!
I used my Panasonic digital camera and edited it together.
The audio was recorded into Logic and looped along with the video to make the track.
Hope you like it!

Kaoss Padness

I got myself a Kaoss Pad 3 which is a sample/effect processor bit of ace equipment. I've been wanting to give it a go for ages and this is the result of my first encounter with it.

It is all freestyled and done live in one take with my microphone plugged into one Kaoss Pad 3.
All the sounds are voice generated and manipulated with the effects in the Kaoss Pad in real time.

There is much more to come like this and more...

A day out with Tim Shaw - vlog with beatbox freestyle

This weekend I went to hang out on a new TV show hosted by the awesomo Tim Shaw. It featured a collection of weird and wonderful human beings including a magician and contortionist, a professor, a rapper, a clairvoyant, an ex sas dude, a dominatrix, a beatboxer, a man who lifts a car battery with freshly pierced arms, a film director, Lord Brocket and a couple of bands amongst others.
I had a blast and have put together the bits of video I made while I was there in this little video blog including a freestyle beatbox I did with Klumzy Tung freestyle rapping and Chris Cross doing strange things with his body!

First Show Of 2011... it begins!

I'm headed down to London to play my first show of the year at Excel Exhibition Centre. I am well rested, my voice is enjoying a level of clarity it hasn't experienced for a long while thanks to my new year booze abstinence and i'm looking forward to hearing it blurting out a 15k rig this evening.
The event is a wakeboarding competition... i'm hoping to pick up some tips as i was pretty bad at it the one time i tried, although I only had a couple of goes.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Show Video and Pics

So first of all Happy New Year! I hope you've been having fun and are ready to smash it to the new year.
My resolution when it comes to beatboxing is to make sure I keep posting lots of videos of my various beatboxing endeavors... last year I posted... wait for it... NO new videos. For this I am sorry and ashamed and now I have a load of new stuff waiting to be filmed and posted... and that's a promise!

I shall start off with a short clip of my show at Beats on the Beach in Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix event. There's only a few clips that came out ok as my camera died so I only had my phone... booo.... but i'm waiting for some of the official video to come through so you can see the whole show.

I shared the lineup of the festival with the likes of Linkin Park, Kanye West and PRINCE to name a few and played to around 30,000 people on the beach stage, just before the headliner... was totally awesome!

The first 4 jumps of my AFF Skydiving course!

I went to do my AFF skydiving course at the Voss dropzone in Norway last August.
I was invited to play a show in return for the course and ended up playing in a valley where base jumpers were landing... it was incredible!
Here's the video of me doing the first 4 out of the 7 jumps you need to complete the course. Unfortunately bad weather meant I had to stop, but I completed the rest a month later at Langer in the UK, the video of my last 3 will come soon... meanwhile, check out me FLYING!!

A short film that documents the day Swimming performed a unique acoustic version of Sun In The Island in the Skyspace installation found at the heart of Kielder Forest, Northumberland.

It is recorded by sonic artist Dallas Simpson using tiny microphones in his ears (binaural recording) that is designed to be listened back on headphones.
This will transport you to the exact placement of Dallas, moving around the space and the sound in this magical environment.

So we're now in Sheffield... only a handful of shows to go!
The past few days have been pretty crazy - amazing crowds in Glasgow, Birmingham... i can hardly remember further back than that, but each show has been an awesome experience for us all, many thanks!

We all went GoKarting yesterday, was basically an ice rink!! Had an awesome time, here's the crew!

Hello folks!

So since my crazy summer of festival fun (and a big thankyou to all who were there for my shows to make em so ace) I have been doing the rounds at fresher’s events to herald a new year of the uk’s finest academic brains embarking on their quest for brain food by starting university. I went to Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Oxford, Chester, Brighton and London to party with the fresher’s and had my own lesson in how many fluorescent colours alcohol now comes in… get your shots out! There’s a video on it’s way from my full show in Oxford, will keep you posted.

I have just been on tour with my band SWIMMInG supporting Libertines man Carl Barat in Europe. We are excited to have just signed a record deal and there’s gonna be a lot of band action to fit around my beatboxing schedule over the coming seasons!

//ABU DHABI

So I went off to Abu Dhabi to play the Beats on the beach Festival where I shared a place on the lineup with Sugarbabes, Kanye West and Prince and Kelis it was sweet! There will be some video coming soon check the picture above to see the size of it WoW!

//DIVERSITY
The Diversity xmas tour is here and I’m pleased to say I’m with them again! It’s something a little different… and different is what I like so I hope to be seeing some of you there again and some of you that are going for the first time! I will be blogging every day with pictures and new you can check these out here

Making Beats on the Bus to Bournemouth

We are currently in Bournemouth at the International Centre for the first of the matinee days... one show down, another on this evening!

The drive down was awesome, thanks to my loop pedal going down a treat with the boys, particularly Aidan and Mitchell!

My band are on route to London from Nottingham to play a show at Hoxton Bar and Grill tonight.
Oh yeah.... it's snowing loads... and the heating in our van has died as you can see in this completely unstaged shot...

Anyway we should make it fine n well and I can't wait to get playing with my band again... it's been a couple of weeks since we finished our UK and European tour with Carl Barat, be good to get the drum sticks back in my hands!

So unfortunately the Diversity show today in Southend had to be cancelled... it's a shame but I'm sure we'll all be back there before long.

I'm not too upset though - it means I've had tome to mission it back to Notts to practice with my band ahead of our show tomorrow, playing at Hoxton Bar and Grill in London.

Carving bus tracks through the snow to Belfast

We just landed in Belfast!
Soooooo the show last night in Dublin was amaaazing! The place was massive and packed and the crowd were ace! Check out the pic below... not great but you can see how many peeps were there...

We were then greeted back at the hotel by loads of folks that had been to the show... it started snowing... heavily... and the greatest snowball fight I have ever had ensued, instigated by myself and Terry... i was covered in snow, Aidan was dashing snowballs, Perri was ducking and weaving, Mitchell was skidding on the ice... and about 20 other kids were trying their hardest to make sure we were all covered head to foot in snow... it was snowy chaos, but I loved it! I then had to go out soaking wet, hair dripping... but it was soooo worth it!
I didn't have my camera, would've been a dangerous move, but here's some pics from the morning's snow fun action!

We were greeted this morning by a layer of snow on the Dublin footpaths... which can only mean one thing........ snowball fight!!! Awesome! This was obviously a warm up for the show at the O2 arena tonight, the biggest venue of the tour, can't wait.

So i'm off on tour with Diversity again for their Christmas tour! We started last weekend with the first show at Butlins in Minehead - a smasher which also saw me make my dancing debut... yes I danced on stage... with Diversity... in front of 4,500 people... crazy!

We're currently in Dublin, just arrived at the airport, ready to play the o2 tomorrow - biggest venue of the tour!

So i'm off on tour with Diversity!

Ok so you all know I like to spread myself around when it comes to working with and doing shows with different types of artist. I have supported the likes of Mystery Jets and New Young Pony Club, played rock festivals, worked with hip hop supergroups Foreign Beggars and 1st Blood, played alongside Andy C and Pendulum in the DnB world, played at techno supernight Firefly, I recently toured with RnB singer Jay Sean and this month I shall be joining none other than the awesome dance group known as Diversity on their UK tour. They have written me a part in their show especially (playing myself of course) after playing together at the world freerunning champs last year, and it’s gonna be a monster of a show!

So i've just got back from touring with Jay Sean to help promote his new single 'Do You remember'. I had an awesome time, Jay's a great guy, as were all the crew, Ben a.k.a. Elvis upon the geetar and the lovely Michelle on vox.
During the week I ended up on Skyrock Radio, Ado and Fun Radio in France, recorded sessions for 1xtra, Capital, Sun Bizarre, did a Maida Vale Session, did a live show in Copenhagan and performed live on Live From Studio 5 with the one and only Ian Wright!

New dates announced for Jay Sean's promo tour

Hey y'all!
So the bad news is the arena tour set for Feb with Jay Sean and NeYo is no longer happening as intended - Jay Sean won't be joining NeYo and as I am guesting as part of Jay's show, neither will I. There will be new dates announced very soon though so all is well and good there!

As for this month - as you know one of the aspects of beatboxing i celebrate and indulge in alot is the freedom for beatboxing to be used in any which way and for any kind of music. I have supported the likes of Mystery Jets and Automatic, worked with hip hoppers Foreign Beggars and First Blood, featured on a hardcore track with Audio Junkie, i'm in Swimming, an etherial rock/psychedelic pop band, i've played with Pendulum, Zinc, Andy C in the DnB world... the list goes on...
Well this month, I shall be mostly beatboxing RnB! I'm joining Jay Sean on his promo tour over the next couple of weeks, during which time you will spot me on T4, MTV, Sun Bizarre, XFM, 1Xtra, Capitol and few other places around the media highway. I will keep you all updated with my twitter
